It was like yesterday when I went to my first concert with my mom in 2013. I saw Bruno Mars at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. I remember standing up and dancing around with my mom while recording some of the songs with my red iPod touch. While recording, I remember him looking at me and stating on the microphone to put your phones down and enjoy the moment and the heart attack I was having while he said it and looking at me. Those were the days. It's very crazy that the digital era already had an effect with how I enjoyed a concert. The fact that I was recording the songs at 13 years old instead of being full immersed in the concert is very unfortunate now that I think about it. Now at every concert you go to you see mostly everyone recording their phones whether it be on the regular camera, Snapchat, or Instagram stories. It's very disheartening.
Although the digital era has impacted the way we enjoy the actual concert, it also has added some excitement. I went to a 5 Seconds of Summer concert in 2018 and they had a social media wall. "A social media wall is an aggregated feed of social media posts from social sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook that are showcased on a digital signage display or screen. Posts with specific hashtags or handles are channeled to the display, which rotates in new content automatically," (Miles, 2020). It was very exciting and fun to see the people at the concert see themselves on the screen, along with their tweets and Instagram photos. It brought more personality and fun to the pre-concert experience and made fans and I even more excited and thrilled for the concert than before. I thought it was a nice way to interact with the audience before the show began.
All the concerts that I have been to have been absolutely thrilling. I have seen Harry Styles (x2), Shawn Mendes (x3 and got to meet him through z100), Ariana Grande (x2), Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias, 5 Seconds of Summer (x3), The Chainsmokers, Justin Bieber, and Ed Sheeran. All performances were fantastic and had something in common with the digital era. They all had social media presence while the concert is going on (live updates from fan accounts), video/images from the concert afterwards, and photos of concertgoers in their outfits at the arena. The most social media presence I have seen from any of the concerts I have been to was Harry Styles' concert. There were images/videos of everyone's outfits and the concert before, during, and after. The social media presence that comes mostly from the fans and their live updates accounts does enough for the tour to become wildly popular and brings more people to want and buy more tickets to the show because of how fun it looks. I even tried to buy tickets to another date because of how fun it was and seeing more picture of it at different locations just makes me want to experience it again. The digital era has had an extreme influence on the fact of buying tickets or not to go see a performer whether you are a fan or not and it will continue to be this way for a long time.
